Today, I was listening to the super awesome Grooveshark (my top online music/radio app pick; even over Pandora). Problem is it’s a web application and I had a whole slew of tabs open; needless to say, I kept accidentally closing the tab in which Grooveshark was open. My solution? Create a quick application via Mozilla’s Prism project. Here are the quick and easy steps to turn the Grooveshark website (or any other) into a desktop application:
- Hop on over to Mozilla’s Prism project and download it for your operating system.
- Install it on your computer.
- Open it up and set the options exactly like these.
- Decide where you want to save the application.
- Click save; choose to open it up now or view saved location.
There you go– creating a Grooveshark application is easy. Now, I know that many of you Mac users out there may be wondering why I chose Mozilla Prism over the Fluid App. The reason why is that I have found Fluid to be buggy with flash (Grooveshark is flash); when I tried to type within the Fluid Grooveshark app, it displayed two letters for every keystroke, and I was unable to delete both of those letters. In short: Fluid was a hassle.
Enjoy!
how can i make the ad removed from grooveshark in the generated application?
Thanks for this guide! I've just followed it and it's perfect. However, in response to the ad on the right-hand side, there is a way to disable that.
1. Download Greasemonkey for Prism from http://github.com/teramako/greasemonkey-for-prism...
2. Create a Prism shortcut to any URL and using any settings as long as 'Show status messages and progress' is checked.
3. Open the new Prism shortcut. Click the cog icon at the bottom right and then Tools>Add-ons…
4. Click Install at the bottom left of the new window and choose the Greasemonkey for Prism .xpi file you downloaded earlier.
5. After installation, close the window. Now re-open and click the cog icon again, now click Greasemonkey then Download User Script…
6. Paste this URL – http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/56063.user…. – then click OK
7. Close that window then reopen your Grooveshark Prism shortcut. All done!
I don't think I've missed any steps. Also it's somewhat fiddly, but still, it works.
This is what I ended up doing aswell, after googling around for a while. Worked ok for me.
Is there any way to disable the "status messages and progress" bar at the bottom when you are done configuring greasemonkey?
There is. On Windows 7/Vista, go to C:Users****USER***AppDataRoamingWebApps***WEBAPPNAME***
In the webapp.ini, change status=true to status=false.
Also, an amendment to my original post. The URL to paste into Greasemonkey is now http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/77227.user…. since the site has changed to HTML (make sure to copy the entire URL, the comments truncate it).
I've been messing with different types of methods for this today and instead of a desktop app, I decided to use webclip in safari to put it in the dashboard. That way you can remove the ad and keep your desktop/workspace clear and have music in the background.
The only drawback I've seen, is it won't let you type in the search field…..maybe an issue with flash. The only workaround is type what you want to search in another program and paste it in there.
Grooveshark VIP – with it's desktop app – is just 3 $ a month until december. So why even bother trying to set up a no-ads version? Come on, one whole year of Grooveshark VIP is less than your broadband charges for a month!
If you're on Windows, you can also use WinGrooves (http://www.wingrooves.com) which includes global hotkey support so you can control GrooveShark from anywhere.
